Union politics

This subproject examines the relationship between mining unions and other actors in Zambia and Congo's civil society in the context of the copper-boom of the last ten years.

This project departs from a long tradition within African studies of focusing on the political role of unions. It instead explores how informal activities in the workplace create ‘trade union identities’, and how individual trade unionists become intermediaries between the union, workers and the company.
The subproject also aims to study how international environmental and social campaigns are created from below through an exploration of similarities and differences between unions and civil society organisations in their interactions with global northern bodies.
